| Mention the words "Winter" "January" "North Shore" "Oahu" "Maui" to any surfer enthusiast in the world and his eyes will light up. It doesnt get any better anywhere in the world. Winter brings 15 to 20ft high waves easy on the north shore and is "surfing disney land." This one is taken from the top of a 800 ft high cliff on the northern side of western Maui. Every car would look at the "Scenic Overlook" sign and pull over. A quick glance at the wonderful landscape was followed by the next 30 minutes looking at these surfers with our jaws dropped. The waves here were atleast 15ft high, crashing with monstrous ferocity and knocking these guys over. This particular surfer was engulfed by the wave four or five times following which he rode the next beast of a wave for a good 10 seconds. I was armed with the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 and in those 10 seconds I took 12 shots at f/2.8 and 1/1250 second as some 30 of us watched in complete silence.
